Autoimmune hepatitis

  Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a complex immune-mediated liver disease that is diagnosed histologically by interface hepatitis and high serum levels of liver enzymes- alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and immunoglobulin G (IgG) and the presence of autoantibodies. AIH responds favorably to steroids and pharmacologic immunosuppression, and liver transplantation is only necessary in cases with acute liver failure or end-stage liver cirrhosis.
